A 49-minute Documentary Film DVD
Directed by Victress Hitchcock
In
the summer of 1989, at the age of 44, Paul Joe Vest was diagnosed
with AIDS. At a time when a diagnosis of AIDS was a virtual
death sentence, for Vest it became the beginning of a journey
that was to transform his life.
Moving to the spiritual community of Crestone, Colorado he
began composing a requiem for chorus and orchestra using Walt
Whitman’s poems on death and dying – in celebration
of all people who have died and who live with AIDS.
This award winning video follows the creation of composer Vest’s
lyrical “Requiem”. Candid conversations with Vest
and family and friends, including poet Allen Ginsberg are woven
together with the poetry of Walt Whitman read by Ginsberg to
create an unforgettable portrait of a human being living with
AIDS.
As
an inspiration to live fully in the face of impermanence, “Song
of the Open Road” is as timely today as it was when it
was first released. For those facing any life threatening disease
or change of life circumstances, “Song of the Open Road”
encourages us to open our hearts to the unpredicatable and live
with grace and humor doing what we love.
In the 15 years since it was first released, “Song of
the Open Road” has been seen on PBS stations, used in
hospice settings, university classes and AIDS awareness and
education events across the country. This is the first time
it is available in DVD.
“Song of the Open Road”
has a message that speaks to people who love and suffer, who
wonder about the purpose of life and how to go on. The video
speaks to people with HIV, touched by HIV, or those who know
no one with HIV…”
